1 Lunar Colony Design Challenge January 14, 2004 Indeed it is the nature of humanity to explore beyond our horizons. Humanity explores in order to discover, discovers in order to gain new knowledge, and gains new knowledge to enhance the quality of life for itself. It has been by looking beyond current horizons that human civilization advances. ~ President George W. Bush

2 Goals and Objectives The fundamental goal of this vision is to advance U.S. scientific, security, and economic interests through a robust space exploration program. In support of this goal, the United States will: Implement a sustained and affordable human and robotic program to explore the solar system and beyond; Extend human presence across the solar system, starting with a human return to the Moon by the year 2020, in preparation for human exploration of Mars and other destinations; Develop the innovative technologies, knowledge, and infrastructures both to explore and to support decisions about the destinations for human exploration; and Promote international and commercial participation in exploration to further U.S. scientific, security, and economic interests. ~ President George W. Bush

3 The Challenge By 2020 the United States is hoping to have established a lunar colony. This colony would be used to conduct research, gather information about lunar soil, and be a stepping stone for travel to Mars and beyond. It your challenge to design and create a model of a possible lunar colony and determine the public’s reaction to it and other space issues.
