3 12 March 2008 GridPP20 Collaboration Meeting Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow Role of Technical Director The role of the Technical Director is to: 1.To sit on the Project Management Board representing technical (middleware) activities and advising the project leader on technical issues; 2.To ensure that the Project Management Board is fully aware of middleware activities and issues that might affect the project; 3.To ensure that the Deployment Board are kept fully aware of the middleware issues by sitting on the Deployment Board; 4.To ensure that the User Board are kept fully aware of the middleware issues by liaison through the User Board chair;

4 12 March 2008 GridPP20 Collaboration Meeting Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow Role of Technical Director 4.To report on technical issues, as necessary, to the Collaboration, the Collaboration Board and STFC. 5.To identify the need for, and facilitate arrangement of, meetings covering middleware technologies, operational support, technical experiment requirements, site issues related to middleware, and technical training; 6.To work towards integration of middleware activities in the wider context, particularly of LCG and EGEE, and within the general UK eScience programme; 7.To ensure that progress towards technical deliverables or metrics against the project schedule and use of resources is monitored on a quarterly basis; 8.To report to the Project Manager on matters relating to any project deliverables and milestones defined within his or her purview.

5 12 March 2008 GridPP20 Collaboration Meeting Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow Specific responsibilities of the Technical Director include: Grid Storage Management: To maintain an overarching view of the work in the storage areas in order to: Advise the project on issues and risks; to ensure that an appropriate set of milestones and metrics are developed against which this area can be monitored; to ensure that appropriate operational support is provided to the community; to facilitate sensible plans for maintenance and development of storage technologies; to review quarterly reports and ensure that they are received by the project manager. This area presently covers the DPM, DCache and CASTOR technologies but a weather eye should be kept on others such as STORM that may be deployed in the UK. The related posts directly funded by GridPP3 are Post C5: DPM Service support (Edinburgh) and Post C4/C6: Castor/DCache support (RAL). Grid Data Management: To maintain an overarching view of the work in the area of Data Management in order to: Advise the project on issues and risks; to ensure that an appropriate set of milestones and metrics are developed against which this area can be monitored; to ensure that appropriate operational support is provided to the community; to facilitate sensible plans for maintenance and development of Grid Data Management services within the constraints of the effort available but within the wider context of possible complementary work in ScotGrid; to review quarterly reports and ensure that they are received by the project manager. Grid Information and Monitoring: To ensure that the limited effort in this area is sensibly targeted at (a) providing support for R-GMA for the period it is required and (b) supporting and facilitating any transition to replacement technologies. Workload Management Systems: To maintain an overview of the WLMS work at Imperial, consisting of WLMS release testing and RB logging, to advise the project on issues and risks; to ensure that an appropriate set of milestones and metrics are developed against which this area can be monitored; to ensure that appropriate operational support is provided to the community; to facilitate sensible plans for maintenance and development of WLMS services within the UK; to review quarterly reports and ensure that they are received by the project manager. Security: To maintain an overview of the Security work funded by GridPP3 in order to advise the project on issues and risk; to ensure that an appropriate set of milestones and metrics are developed against which these areas can be monitored; to ensure that appropriate operational support is provided to the community; to review the quarterly reports and ensure that they are received by the Project Manager. There were clowns and elephants and dancing bears. And a beautiful lady in pink tights flew high above our heads. And so I sat there watching the marvellous spectacle. I had the feeling that something was missing. I don't know what, but when it was over, I said to myself, "is that all there is to a circus? ? Ask 3

We would take long walks by the river or just sit for hours gazing into each other's eyes. We were so very much in love.
