3 We are quite limited in what we know, whether we address the right questions, how we express our knowledge and why we do what we do Education is the tool of choice to do better 12-01-2015Hans F. Hoffmann: esi president's introduction to Juas 20153 We are Charlie, Ahmed,....

4 Ernest Hemingway The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable; they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.” -- Nobel lecture 2001 Kofi Annan and UNO: Today's real borders are not between nations, but between powerful and powerless, free and fettered, privileged and humiliated. Today, no walls can separate humanitarian or human rights crises in one part of the world from national security crises in another. Because beneath the surface of states and nations, ideas and language, lies the fate of individual human beings in need. Answering their needs will be the mission of the United Nations in the century to come. Bertrand Russell (1950): All who are not lunatics are agreed about certain things. That it is better to be alive than dead, better to be adequately fed than starved, better to be free than a slave. Many people desire those things only for themselves and their friends; they are quite content that their enemies should suffer. These people can only be refuted by science: Humankind has become so much one family that we cannot ensure our own prosperity except by ensuring that of everyone else. If you wish to be happy yourself, you must resign yourself to seeing others also happy. We are Charlie, Ahmed,.... 12-01-2015Hans F. Hoffmann: esi president's introduction to Juas 20154
