Acting on an indictment by the U.S. Justice Department, Swiss police arrested several top FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) officials, including two vice presidents, during an overnight raid in Zurich on charges of corruption Wednesday. The U.S. investigation targets alleged wrongdoing that spans 24 years. U.S. prosecutors issued arrest warrants for 14 people, on charges ranging from money laundering to fraud and racketeering. They include FIFA officials who took bribes totaling more than $150 million and in return provided "lucrative media and marketing rights" to soccer tournaments as kickbacks. Swiss authorities also said they have opened their own criminal investigation into FIFA's operations, this one pertaining to the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids, which went to Russia and Qatar respectively. Ten people are being questioned.

In Other News By Wednesday morning, at least 18 people were found dead in Texas and Oklahoma, as well as 13 in northern Mexico from the same storm system that lead to massive rainfall and flooding. Another 13 people are still missing. A 21-year-old airman shot two Walmart employees, killing one, before apparently ending his own life in the store on Tuesday in Grand Forks, North Dakota. There is no obvious link between Willis and the victims or to the store. The Air Force Office of Special Investigations is working with police on the case. A deadly heat wave in India has killed more than 1,154 people in the past few days. India recorded its highest maximum temperature of 117 degrees Fahrenheit in the state of Odisha on Monday.
