3 Focused Notes are MANY things…  A way to collect information in class  A way to interact with the information you learned (today’s focus)  A way to collaborate with peers  A tool to help you study information What are Focused Notes?

4  These past few days we…  Learned to format Focused Notes  Wrote an essential question  Learned notetaking tips  Learned about levels of inquiry  Wrote questions for our notes (2 nd way we review our notes)  Used the essential question write a topic sentence for our summary Let’s Review

5  When writing a summary, we needed to focus on two things… 1. focus on answering the essential question  Briefly review the essential question (what is it?) 2.identify the main ideas and details in your notes  Review your notes  Identify the main ideas (what are they?)  HINT: look at how you’ve organized your notes, the main ideas are easily identified if you’ve skipped lines and use capital letters Writing a Summary

6 1.Introductory Sentences (2 sentences)  Topic sentence + 1 other intro sentence for the reader 2.Supporting Details (# is determined by your notes)  Provides details from the notes that answer the EQ  Connected by TRANSITIONS 3.Closing Sentences (1 sentence)  Restates the topic of your summary in a new way and provides a closing thought Remember the Parts of a Summary

8  Now that we have our INTRODUCTORY SENTENCES, let’s ORGANIZE the supporting details for our summary paragraph Writing a Summary

9  To get our details, look at your notes and identify the main ideas by how you organized them in your notes Writing a Summary

(+1 more introductory sentence) Notes Topic #1 Notes Topic #2 Notes Topic #3 Closing Sentence (1) NOW as a class, think of 2 details that explain or elaborate on each of the main ideas (school website, academic timeline, and NEST) taking care to focus on answering the EQ. Write these as bullets beneath the main ideas.

This is a restatement of the topic sentence, but in a new and thoughtful way.
