18. CMP3: Three grades in one course All three grades were included in one course so that instructors can select exercises from all three grades (including prerequisite material) when creating assignments for any grade.

19. CMP3: Customizing the TOC When creating a course, all content for all three grades is selected by default. Teachers can hide content when creating their course by deselecting what they don’t want. Hidden content can be reinstated at any time.

30. CMP3: Sample Assignments Sample Assignments: Recommended Workflow 1. Copy sample assignments for a portion of the course (with auto-assign due dates, if desired) 2. Organize the assignments in the order they should be presented to the student (adjust due dates if necessary) 3. Personalize the HW assignments for each unit (This means associating each practice assignment with its corresponding assessment.) 4. Check/adjust order and due dates for personalized assignments if necessary. 5. Assign a small batch of assignments so that they are available to students The following slides walk through these steps.

31. CMP3: Sample Assignments Finding the sample assignments: The sample assignments are not visible in the “show all” view of the HW/Test Mgr. Teachers must click “Homework” or “Quizzes & Tests” to see them

32. To see sample homework, click Homework, then select a unit to see practice assignments available for that unit. Select a unit here Note: These assignments are not available to students unless the teacher copies and assigns them using the Actions drop down menu or the batch process shown in these slides. 33. To see sample assessments, click Quizzes and Tests. You will see all quizzes and tests listed for the course. Note: Once teachers create their own assignments, they will be listed at the top of the window here. The sample assignments will then be listed BELOW the teacher- created assignments. Note: Unlike homework, sample quizzes and tests are available to students by default. Teachers can click “Set Availability” to change this. “Available” is different from “Assigned.” “Available” means that the assignments are available to the student with default settings, no due dates, and results will not be factored into the student's overall score. A teacher needs to copy and assign the assessment in order to set preferences, due dates, customize the student experience, and include results in a student’s overall score.

34. Teachers can batch copy and assign sample assignments rather than copying each one individually. On the HW/Test Mgr page, click Create Assignment, then select “Copy and Assign Sample Assignments.” CMP3: Sample Assignments

35. The first step of the batch process asks teachers if they would like MathXL to auto-assign due dates to all of the assignments. Yes distributes assignment due dates evenly across the timeframe specified by the teacher in this order: Chapter 1: All HW Chapter 1: All tests Chapter 2: All HW Chapter 2: All tests ETC…. These dates can be adjusted afterwards. No allows the teacher to manually assign due dates to the copied assignments—either individually or on a batch “change due dates” page. CMP3: Sample Assignments

36. On Step 2, sample assignments are listed by unit--homework is listed first then tests for each unit. Teachers can use check boxes to select sample assignments to copy. CMP3: Sample Assignments

37. If the teacher selected Yes for auto-assigning due dates, Step 3 will ask them to specify a date range and days of the week for assignments to be due. CMP3: Sample Assignments

38. The last step shows all assignments that have been selected with any auto-assigned due dates. Teachers can assign them, change their names or due dates if desired, then click “Copy” at the bottom of the screen to finish. Note that when due dates are automatically assigned, the assignment due dates are evenly spaced in this default order: HW and then assessments in the first chapter, HW and then assessments in the second chapter, and so on. Teachers can change due dates on this screen to change this default distribution. They can change the assignment order later on the Reorder Assignments page. (The order of these assignments in the student list is independent of due dates.) If teachers don’t adjust due dates here, they can adjust them individually or in a batch mode on the Change Dates & Assign Status page later on.

39. Once sample assignments are copied, they appear in the top portion of the HW & Test Mgr page. Note that assignments are listed in the HW/Test Mgr and for students in this default order: HW and then assessments in the first chapter, HW and then assessments in the second chapter, and so on. 40. CMP3: Reordering Assignments Teachers can now change the order of how assignments will appear in the student’s assignment list using the Reorder Assignments page. (Note that changing the due dates does not change the list order.)

41. CMP3: Reordering Assignments On the Reorder Assignments page, teachers can easily drag and drop assignments into the order they’d like them listed for the students. In this screenshot, the assignments in unit 6-1 have been reordered so they appear in the order that students should work through them rather than by assignment type. TIP 1: If the teacher assigns due dates according to the order in which she would like the assignments completed, she can then come to this screen and click on “End Date” to reorder them automatically by due date. TIP 2: The teacher should be sure to reorder personalized assignment pairs so that the test is first and the practice is second. For example, the Unit 6-1 Readiness Assessment should come before the Unit 6-1 Readiness Additional Practice.

42. A teacher can link a Readiness Assessment to a Readiness Additional Practice so that the exercises in the Practice set are determined by the student’s performance on the corresponding assessment for that unit. [Review assessments and practice sets can also be linked in the same way.] Start by selecting “Edit” from the Actions drop down menu for the practice assignment. 43. On Step 1 of the assignment editing wizard, check “Yes” to omit questions from objectives that are mastered by the student on the corresponding assessment. Select the Unit 6-1 Readiness Assessment, then click Save or Save & Assign. This pick list will show sample tests that the teacher has already copied. CMP3: Making Personalized Assignments

44. After clicking Save on the previous screen, the teacher will see a dialog box about question selection. Be sure to click “No” on this screen. (Clicking “Yes” will reduce the number of exercises in the practice assignment.) If the teacher clicks “Yes” by mistake, they can delete the assignment and re-copy the sample assignment to start over. CMP3: Making Personalized Assignments

47. Student View: After both assignments are made available to students, they will see that the practice assignment has a prerequisite (indicated by the green flag). CMP3: Personalized Assignments

49. Students can access the assignment directly from their test summary page. Exercises available in the practice are determined by the test results.

50. Exercises are suppressed in the Practice if topics are “mastered” on the test. Note that the definition of “mastery” can be modified by the teacher in the Study Plan Manager. This student has some exercises suppressed in their Practice assignment because of their test performance. Note that the suppressed questions have a green checkmark indicating that the student has already received credit for them based on their test performance. Those questions are not clickable from this page. If the student needs to access them, they can go the Results page and click the “Review” link for this assignment.

51. The default setting for mastery is “100%” for tests and quizzes. Instructors can change this to any value. This setting will determine how many exercises associated with a given topic a student must answer correctly on an assessment in order for MathXL to suppress exercises from that topic in their personalized practice. In this instance, the teacher has changed the mastery setting to 80% for tests and quizzes instead of 100%. This means that the student must get 80% of the questions associated with an objective correct before those exercises are eliminated from their Additional Practice assignment. CMP3: Mastery Settings
