2  After each advertisement is presented, discuss each of the following questions in your groups and come to consensus on your decision.  Who is the intended audience for the advertisement?  Is there a logical fallacy at work in the advertisement? If so, identify the fallacy.  Does the advertisement reflect a stereotype? If so, what is it?  Do you think the advertisement is successful? Why or why not?

3  Post the summaries of the article you began in class on Tuesday to Edmodo.  You have five minutes to complete this task.

4  Read the article, “Horry County Schools put Kibosh on Visible Tattoos,” originally printed in The Sun News on September 15, 2010.  Choose one of the following marking or charting the text strategies: Circle key words/phrases and underline definitions. Circle key words/repeated words underline author’s claims. Chunk text after initial reading. Chart what the author is saying on the left margin and what the author is doing on the right margin.  Use the following summary template to write a summary of the article.summary template  Next, read the letter to the editor from October 12, 2010 written in response to the September 15 th article.  Mark the text as you read. Circle any key terms and underline the author’s claims.  Re-read the article and look for ACE. Highlight the author’s main ideas one color, their citations in another, and their explanations in a third color.  Choose either the summary template from above or the Super 7 Summary strategy to summarize the author’s argument.

6  Post summaries for both articles on Edmodo.

7  Read the article, “Apron Strings Remain Virtually Attached; College Students Stay Connected with Parents Via Technology,” by Angie Leventis Lourgos from AVID Weekly.  Mark the text using the ACE Highlighting Strategy  Write a short summary of the article using the summary strategy of your choice and post your summary to Edmodo. In the subject line, state the type of summary strategy you used.

8  Use the letter to the editor provided in class as a model.  Write either a letter to the editor of AVID Weekly or a letter to your parents in which you respond to the article “Apron Strings…”  Your letter should have a thesis statement. Each paragraph should have a main idea, citations/evidence, and an explanation of how this information proves your thesis.  Save these writings to your h:/drive.

9  Read “An Apology for the Life of Ms. Barbie D. Doll”  Choose a critical reading strategy to use while you read. Be prepared to share your choice with the class.  Write a reader’s response blog and post to Edmodo before our next regular class meeting.
