2 Spies in US Nixon exposes State Dept. Alger Hiss employee as a spy in 1948 Klaus Fuchs arrested in 1950 for passing atomic bomb secrets to USSR He implicates the Rosenberg’s in his plan They become 1 st US citizens executed for spying during Cold War

3 McCarthy’s Witch Hunt Seeking to boost his 1952 re- election bid, Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy played on peoples fear of communism He made unfounded accusations against the government and the Democrats This tactic becomes known as “McCarthyism”

4 His downfall 1954, he went after the US Army His crony Roy Cohn was drafted so they became the target Live televised hearings exposed McCarthy as a bully and a fraud He is condemned by Senate, and dies 3 years later from effects of alcoholism

5 Impact The rise in anti-communist fears that gripped the US, sees laws passed that violate rights, peoples lives destroyed, and a heightened suspicion of your life Many Americans seem willing to sacrifice some freedoms to make US free of communists
