Accelerator Consolidation Workshop Why are we here? Boundary conditions What is (not) included? Outcome and follow-up What is Consolidation?
3
Definitions of Consolidation Business: Merger of smaller companies to create larger ones Geology: Process by which soil decreases in volume Debt: Combination of multiple loans into one big loan Information: Combining data from multiple sources into a centralized system Land: Joining fragmented parcels of land into contiguous plots Beliefs: Strengthening of principles Medicine: Solidification into a firm dense mass Steam Locomotive: 2-8-0 in the Whyte classification (USA) CERN: Replacement or renovation of ageing equipment to improve accelerator reliability Not UPGRADE, not to improve performance this is LIU HL-LHC etc…
4
Why are we all here? Everyone can hear what everyone else wants to do Does your work have potential implications for me? Make a coherent accelerator consolidation (ACC-CONS) plan to LS2 and beyond Set priorities Justify the resources Interaction with other projects LIU, HL-LHC… ○ What we do and when we need to do it
5
Boundary conditions Activities which are started and already funded in 2013 will not be discussed unless there are major changes in the overall costs (not re-profiling) Urgent activities you need to start in 2014 will be considered What, Why & How much Activities you will need to start in the period 2015 to 2020 What, Why, When & How much Covering LINACs, LEIR, PSB, PS, SPS, LHC, AD & North Area AD & North Area have limited financing after LS1 EAST Area is not financed after LS1!

What is included in ACC-CONS? Accelerator equipment In the tunnel and in service buildings Don’t forget the associated controls Accelerator services Electricity, cabling, water, cooling, ventilation, access systems, tunnel smoke detection…. Don’t forget the associated controls Infrastructure Tunnels & accelerator surface buildings LHC Spares Program: In 2010 “P Strubin” report on missing LHC spares was included in ACC-CONS “Completed” by 2015
8
We should not use ACC-CONS to replace missing operations (or other) budget. ACC-CONS is not for… Regular replacement of equipment on a continuous basis Maintenance programs Consumables Regularly used spare parts But what if important activities are not covered by an Operations budget? What is (not) included?
9
CONTROLS BE/CO & EN/ICE will NOT have Consolidation budgets for your works If your activity needs controls modifications, we will include this in your budget allocation What about replacement of control system hardware? Equipment gets outdated very quickly Should this be in ACC-CONS? What is (not) included?
10
Main workshop, cranes & transport equipment…?? During LHC construction, very limited resources for renovation works Urgent renovation works were included in ACC-CONS to cover a number of essential works However, there is a need for regular and systematic renovation on a continuous basis. Funding for these type of activities needs to be clarified with Sector Management & RPC
11
Proposal Organize a dedicated meeting (early in 2014?) with sector management to decide how this kind of activity should be funded in the long- term Replacement of outdated Controls hardware Main workshop equipment Renovation of cranes etc. ….. This stuff all needs to be done but how? Individual separate projects, ACC-CONS, Operations budget…???
12
Outcome & Follow-up Information from today will be put together and used to establish a new plan Presented at a follow-up seminar in October, after discussion with Groups etc. Special sector meeting (early in 2014?) on activities, which must be funded and maintained but not necessarily as part of ACC-CONS
