Themes and Procedures Continued Ms. Klinkhachorn September 14, 2010 AP Biology

DNA – September 14, 2010 1.Why is it important to study themes in biology? 2.Describe the theme of “structure and function”. Give 2 examples in nature of how structure fits function. 3.One of the themes has to do with how the nonliving and living worlds interact. Describe how the two are interconnected. Use an example.

AP Biology Course Outline Breakdown of how the course will be divided Corresponding AP labs are listed This doesn’t represent the order we will go – We will start with ecology, then do biochemistry, then cells

Theme 5 Theme: Cells are an organism’s basic units of structure and function Cells are the most basic unit of life and they all share characteristics What the cell does, translates to what the organism does at higher levels – Your cells divide so that your skin tissue can repair – Your neurons send electrical pulses so that you can sense touch

Theme 6 Theme: The continuity of life is based on heritable information in the form of DNA DNA is made of units called genes, which are made of nucleotides. The set of genes in our bodies contain all of the information needed to make us and other organisms who we are (our genome)

Theme 7 Feedback mechanisms regulate biological systems Negative and Positive Feedback help control pathways – Negative: hormones, ATP generation – Positive: giving birth (contractions), clotting blood See page 11, figure 1.13

List of Themes 1.Evolution 2.New properties emerge at each level in the biological hierarchy 3.Organisms interact with their environments, exchanging matter and energy 4.Structure and function are correlated at all levels of biological organization 5.Cells are an organism’s basic units of structure and function 6.The continuity of life is based on heritable information in the form of DNA 7.Feedback mechanisms regulate biological systems

On a Separate Sheet of Paper Groups share a sheet of paper. Put all names at the top. Turn in as classwork A picture will come up on the screen. I want you to work in your groups and tell me what themes the picture fits with. There may be one. There may be three or four. See how many you can identify. Defend your answer.

Which Theme(s)?

Homework Read Chapter 52 in your book by Thursday. Answer the questions on your handout and complete the self-quiz. We will start covering the information in Chapter 52 TOMORROW – I suggest reading tonight (or at least skimming) and doing as much of the work as you can to prepare yourself to better learn in class.
