Why study rocks? … because rocks and minerals are involved in all of Earth’s processes like EARTHQUAKES, VOLCANOES, EROSION, AND MOUNTAIN BUILDING

Why study rocks? … because rocks provide clues about what Earth was like when and where they formed. …because rocks and minerals are resources used in every day life.

THE ROCK CYCLE ROCKS are any solid mass of mineral or mineral-like material occurring naturally There are ________________ of rocks classified by ___________________________ – _________________________________

THE ROCK CYCLE PREDICT WHICH ROCK TYPE GOES WITH WHICH PROCESS Sedimentary A. formed by the crystallization of molten magma or lava. Igneous B. formed by the alteration of pre-existing rock deep within Earth (but still in the solid state) by heat, pressure, and/or chemically active fluids. Metamorphic C. formed from the weathered products of preexisting rocks that have been transported, deposited, compacted, and cemented.

THE ROCK CYCLE The rock cycle shows the interrelationships between the 3 rock types Definitions to understand the rock cycle ______________is molten rock that forms deep beneath the surface ___________is magma that has reached earth’s surface _________________is a process in which rocks are broken down by water, air, and living things ____________________is weathered pieces of Earth elements.

THE ROCK CYCLE RECALL: What are the two energy sources for the Earth System? Energy from the Earth’s interior drives the processes that produce ____________________________________ rocks Energy from the Sun drives the processes that produce ______________________________

Rock Cycle Practice In groups of 3 you will be tracing your way through the rock cycle Every group starts as MAGMA Roll the dice to determine what to do next – If you roll a 1 or 2… become an igneous rock – If you roll a 3 or 4… become a sedimentary rock – If you roll a 5 or 6… become a metamorphic rock Write down how you get from each roll to the next You MUST follow the correct processes to get between the rock types Each group must complete at least 6 turns
