4 What is the Summer Robotics Institute (SIR)?  Initiated by NASA and MSU;  Modeled after the NASA Summer Robotics Program;  Began as a two (2) week program in 2006;  Currently a 4 week residential summer program designed to provide high school students, grades 9-12, with the opportunity to learn and discover the science and technology of “Robot Design and Operation”.

5 SIR Mission Mission Statement: To increase the knowledge and understanding of the concepts and principles of Robotics for urban high school students with an interest in careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

6 SIR Curriculum Courses  Robotic Theory: This class is structured for the students to learn about important robotic concepts, i.e mechanical components, sensors, and systems.  Computer Science: This class is structured for the students to learn basics of using the EasyC computer langauge, CAD design program and engineering computer software like MATLAB.  Robotic Design: This class is structured to learn about design concepts and group work techniques.  Robotics Laboratory: This lab is for the students to use all of the skills acquired from the above classes to build a vex robot for the weekly challenge.

7 MSU - NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Partnership Greenbelt, MD  NASA Robotics Academy Poster Presentations  Program sponsorship and coordination  NASA Robotics Academy Shadow Day  Resource support for summer interns
