Genesis 1 Lesson 2

First Five Words  “In the beginning God created”  When?  Who?  What?  Analyze each of these

What is ‘a god?’  a supernatural being, who is worshipped as the controller of some part of the universe or some aspect of life in the world  an image, idol, or symbolic representation of such a deity  any person or thing to which excessive attention is given: money was his god  a man who has qualities regarded as making him superior to other men

Who is “God?”  The existence of God is taken for granted in the Bible. There is nowhere any argument to prove it. He who disbelieves this truth is spoken of as one devoid of understanding  Psalms 14:1 The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good.

Who is “God?”  The arguments by theologians in proof of the being of God are:  The testimony afforded by reason.  We proceed logically from the facts of experience to causes. The cosmological, by which it is proved that there must be a First Cause of all things, for every effect must have a cause. The teleological, or the argument from design. We see everywhere the operations of an intelligent Cause in nature.

Who is “God?”  The arguments by theologians in proof of the being of God are:  The testimony afforded by reason.  We proceed logically from the facts of experience to causes. The moral argument based on the moral consciousness and the history of mankind, which exhibits a moral order and purpose which can only be explained on the supposition of the existence of God. Conscience and human history testify that "verily there is a God that judgeth in the earth."

Who is “God?”  Exodus 34:5-7 Now the LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children to the third and the fourth generation."

In the beginning…  In the beginning of time as we know time  It must necessarily mean the commencement of time which followed, or rather was produced by, God's creative acts, as an effect follows or is produced by a cause

Created  Caused existence where previously to this moment there was no being  The commencement (beginning) of the existence of a thing, or egression from nonentity to entity  Making something from nothing

“And God said…”  How many times in this chapter?  Spoke it into Being  Psalms 33:6-9; 148:1-5; Hebrews 11:3  Keeps it by the Power of His Word  2 Peter 3:7  One day will Bring it to an End  2 Peter 3:10-13

Who were present at the creation?  Genesis 1:1 God (the Father)  Genesis 1:2 Spirit  John 1:1-3 Word (Christ)  At baptism of Jesus… Matthew 3:16-17 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

Creation  Day 1 – light 1:2-5  Day 2 – firmament 1:6-8 signifies an expanse or space Heavens  “day” twenty-three hours, fifty-six minutes, and four seconds Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day.

Creation  Day 3 – dry land, seas, plants 1:9-13  Day 4 – sun, moon, stars 1:14-19  Day 5 – fish and fowls 1:20-23  Day 6 – land animals and man 1:24-31 Genesis 1:26-27 Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Creation finished  Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
