2.  Almost all colleges require ◦ Personal statement or essay  Also, supplemental essays ◦ “Why this college?”  Most scholarships, honors programs, or other special programs also want an essay.

3.  A meaningful experience in your life  A person who impacted your life  A social issue that is important to you  A character that you relate to from books or film  How you will contribute to diversity on campus  A topic of your choice  But here’s the secret…

4.  They’re all the same question.  What they really want to know is, “Tell us about you.”

5. “My mother is the person who made me who I am today. She brought me into this world, and raised me by herself. She works an overnight job to pay our rent and put food on our table. She is the most important person in my life.”  Don’t write an essay that doesn’t say anything about you. This is the biggest mistake you can make.

6.  Has a good “hook” to open up.  Discusses an epiphany – a moment you realized something.  Uses specific examples and details.  There is a before and after (the epiphany).  Explains how you have grown and are different.  Tells us something that we wouldn’t know from the transcript.  Spelling and grammar are perfect.  Captures your true voice.

7.  Not answering the question. (Remember, it’s about you!)  Spelling, grammar, punctuation— “I was working as a counselor and I took my kids to the pork.”  Too long/too short.  Not taking enough time.  It doesn’t sound like you.

8.  It’s your chance to speak directly to admissions office.  A good essay can make up for grades that aren’t as good as you would like.  It can definitely make up for weaker SAT scores.
