MATH STEPS (ROUNDING and ESTIMATING)

ROUNDING STEPS 1)Underline the numeral being rounded. 2)Circle the numeral to the right of the underlined number. 3)Ask yourself if the numeral that is circled is 5 or above, or 4 or below. (REMEMBER: “5 or above, give it a shove…4 or below let it go.”) 4)Use the above saying to decide what to do with the underlined numeral. 5)Make all the numerals to the right of the underlined numeral zeros. 6)All numerals to the left stay the same.

ROUNDING UP STEPS 1)Underline the numeral being rounded. 2)Increase the numeral by one. 3)Make all the numerals to the right of the underlined numeral zeros.

FRONT END ESTIMATING 1)Underline the numeral to the furthest left of the number. (This is the front end of the number.) 2)Make all the numerals to the right of the underlined numeral zeros. 3)Use these numbers now for your equation.

USING COMPATIBLE NUMBERS TO ESTIMATE QUOTIENTS 1)Round the divisor. 2)Look only at the front end numeral of the rounded divisor and compare it with the front two numerals of the dividend. 3)Change the front two numerals in the dividend to a number that is easy to divide by the rounded divisor (These are your compatible numbers), and make all the following numerals in the dividend into zeros. 4)Divide the compatible numbers. 5)Cancel out all zeros with in the divisor with those in the dividend. 6)Place all remaining zeros at the right of your compatible quotient.
