Welcome! Help yourself to a snack. Discuss the following question until we begin at 1:30: What behaviors do you expect from your students as you teach and they learn? Examples to get you started: – Listen – Ask questions – Complete assigned tasks

CLC Objectives We will explore and experience strategies to facilitate 100% student engagement and accountability. You will leave with a repertoire of strategies to use immediately in your classroom

Purpose We know that engaged students: learn at higher levels and have fun doing it; gain a deeper understanding of what they learn; retain more of what they learn.

Initiation What strategies are you currently using to increase student engagement? Why is student engagement important to instruction and student learning? Focus Question: (individual mental processing) Table Talk: (verbal processing) Random Sticks: (accountability)

Repetition is Key “The person that talks the most, learns the most.” Think-Pair-Share Templates Word Slap Game – One child reads a word from the chart, all students repeat, one child slaps the word Sentence reading – After one child reads, have the group read it chorally to build fluency

Accountability and Informal Assessment Numbered heads Random sticks Spinner Dice Share the pen Call groups Thumbs up Hold it, throw it Write it on white boards Hold up fingers 1- 5 Ball toss

Chalk Talk Everyone has one marker Write on the chart at the table about the given topic, quote, math problem, etc. When the music stops, take the same marker to the next table Read the chart and add additional strategies or comment on what is written already You will end up back where you started

Gallery Walk Take a few minutes to review each poster Find a partner and discuss how you could use this strategy in your classroom

BINGO! What strategies do you remember from today? Write a different student engagement strategy for every square on the BINGO board I’ll call out strategies and if you have them on your board, you can mark it off. Who will win BINGO?
