The Body Begins with a topic sentence Explains the situation or example Cites the quote or example Explains why that quote or example was important to the thesis Moves smoothly to the next idea

Begins with an idea, quote or question Catches the reader’s interest States the thesis and how you will prove it Transitions to the first idea in your thesis

The Conclusion Restates the thesis Brings the essay to a smooth close Leaves the reader with some final thoughts about the topic

What Makes A Good Essay? A Good Essay Has a clear thesis statement Is unified and clear Uses transitions Proves the thesis Leaves the reader pondering Has few or no grammatical errors A Poor Essay Does not have a thesis Makes no sense Has several grammatical and diction errors
