Golf balls used to be made of leather and stuffed with feathers They then started making smooth balls out of rubber or wood Golfers began to notice that the ball went a greater distance when it had been used a few times The used balls had scratches, nicks and bumps This lead golf ball makers to start purposely putting dimples on the balls so they would travel further

4. Why does a golf ball have dimples? The dimples give the ball different flight characteristics – A smooth ball actually creates more drag because the way it travels through the air – The ball with dimples is able to reduce the amount of drag caused by the air
