English 9 and Bible Miss McCoy Lesson #18 Conclusions, Parables, Pt 2

Review: Essays ~ A piece of writing focused on one topic, like a paragraph. ~Made up of multiple paragraphs. ~Also divided into Introduction, Body, and Conclusion. -Paragraph level instead of sentence.

Review: Essays An Introduction is a beginning paragraph which states the purpose and goals. The introduction is usually interesting and causes the reader to want to read on. Contains the Thesis Statement.

Review: Essays The Body develops the Thesis Statement and should be around 3 paragraphs long. Contains descriptions, examples, details, arguments, commentary on the Thesis Statement.

Essays The Conclusion brings the essay to a close. Like a Concluding Sentence, no new info introduced, and must restate the Thesis Statement and summarize major points.

Conclusions This is your last chance to persuade your readers to your point of view, and to impress them with your writing and ideas. The impression you create in your conclusion will be the one that stays with your readers after they've finished the essay.

Conclusions The end of an essay should give a sense of completeness and closure.

Conclusions The reader expects the conclusion to do some or all of the following rephrase the question summarize the main ideas give your opinion look to the future (say what will happen if the situation continues or changes)

Conclusions To establish a sense of closure, you might conclude by linking the last paragraph to the first, perhaps by reiterating a word or phrase you used at the beginning. Thesis is a good start.

Example In conclusion, physical punishment can be a useful method of discipline. However it should be the last choice for parents. If we want to build a world with less violence we must begin at home, and we must teach our children to be responsible.

Example In summary, our society would be healthier if more people took part in sports of all kinds. We should continue to try to prevent accidents and injuries. However, we should also ensure that sports are challenging, exciting, and, above all, fun.

Conclusions Two parts: 1. The summary statement is one or two sentences which restate the thesis to reinforce the essay's main idea. 2. The clincher is a final thought which should create a lasting impression on the reader.

Conclusions THE SUMMARY STATEMENT: The summary statement is an effective way to start because it helps to drive home the ideas you've expressed. Look at your thesis statement again and work it in a new way. Avoid repeating key words from the thesis statement because you don't want the summary statement to sound repetitive.

Conclusions Thesis Statement: San Francisco is a stimulating place to visit because of its location, its art galleries, and its many fine restaurants. Summary Statement: If you love beautiful surroundings, world class art, and an exquisite meal, then San Francisco is the place for you.

Conclusion Try to avoid the "so-as-you-can- see" ending and the "in conclusion my thesis statement proves that“ ending. All of these are overused and worn out. You've already made your thesis and reasoning clear. You don't need to tell us that you've just told us something.

A good conclusion will: rephrase the question summarize the main ideas give your opinion look to the future (say what will happen if the situation continues or changes) but will: NEVER add new information

Assignment: Add your conclusion to the Introduction and Body Paragraphs you have already written!

Story Time  More Parables:  The Lost Sheep and The Lost Coin Luke Chapter 15:1-10  The Prodigal Son Luke Chapter 15:11-32

Recall A parable is a story Jesus told to teach a lesson. The story should be easy to remember and will have a special meaning for us to learn from.
