Curriculum Evening Wednesday 17 th September

My Role  To support the development of skills of children in the Early Years  To implement the Curriculum for Excellence in Early Years settings  To ensure that all children are provided with equal opportunities to play and learn in a safe and nurturing environment.

 CfE underpins all the learning that happens within the Nursery setting  CfE is about bringing life to learning and learning to life.  Focused on the importance of knowledge and life skills.  It promotes the ability to learn and takes each child on a learning journey. More information on www.educationscotland.gov.uk/earlyyears

 CfE aims to improve our children’s achievements and life chances  We aim to nurture: 1. Successful Learners 2. Confident individuals 3. Effective contributors 4. Responsible citizens  What does that mean on a day-to-day basis within the Nursery setting?  High quality play experiences

The starting point of a child’s learning journey is about:  Feeling safe and nurtured in their learning environment  Promoting self-confidence to express themselves and join in  Forming friendships and becoming familiar with the children and adults around them  Being able to follow the rules and adhere to boundaries set out for the safety of them and others.

We aim to provide an environment where children are supported socially and emotionally.  Opportunities to talk, laugh, explore, form friendships, be listened to, have their opinion matter.  Once this has been established, children will begin to explore and participate in the learning experiences available in the Nursery.

 Children will be encouraged to stay healthy and look after and respect their body. This will be accessed through:  Discussions about healthy eating ( Eat Well to Play Well)  Opportunities for exercise both indoors and outdoors

 In the Nursery setting we aim to provide opportunities for children to explore and be exposed to literacy in their environment. This includes:  Talking in one-to-one and group situations  Books, print, posters, signs, labels ( indoors and outdoors)  Mark making using a variety of objects, eg. fingers, chalk, pens, sticks in mud, paint, blank forms, sticky tape etc. (Early writing skills)

 In the Nursery setting we aim to provide opportunities for children to explore and be exposed to numeracy in their environment. This includes:  Numbers all around – cars/buses, books, shoes, magnetic numbers etc  Exploring sorting and matching with exciting objects.  Promote talk and use of number skills in daily life – counting, recognising.

 Dance – songs, games, performances, expressions of feelings.  Music – songs, games, Smartboard, musical instruments  Art and Design – creative table, paints, chalk, collage,  Drama - role play real life and imaginary situations, animals etc.

At the Early Years stage we are concentrating on the importance of caring, sharing and respect for each other. This includes celebrating our similarities and differences, what is fair and unfair and how to co-operate with each other.

We aim to build a curiosity about the world around them and develop skills of investigation, observation and how things depend upon each other.  Nature, habitats, planting, how things work, planet earth/oceans, changing states of water, weather, dark/light, stars, electricity, materials.

 The children will be given experiences to discover about people and place.  Where do we live? What do people do?  Features of the local environment  Nature, caring for the environment  Ways to travel/journeys

Children will be able to use and talk about the technologies around us and how they help us.  Torches, lights, batteries, computers, buzzers, magnets, cameras, Beebots, Walkie Talkies, telephones, Smartboard etc.

 Parents, carers and educators are the biggest influences on a child’s learning journey.  Moorpark Pre-5 Centre is a place for families, learning and above all for your children to feel safe, secure and have high quality learning experiences to equip them with the foundations of skills for life.  Please remember that we are here to help and support you and your child and are always willing to answer questions.
