6 http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/1997/global.warming/causes/ The Solomon Island have been and is going to be severely effected by global warming. The Solomon Islands have a number of little islands forming the country. The country’s main islands are formed by volcanoes. The volcanoes are rugged, mountainous, and are covered with tropical plants. These islands range from 140-190km long and 30-50km wide. of above sea level, and the highest point on the islands being Mount Makarakomburu, 2,44m above sea level. Each island has a central spine of mountains. Some mountains are more than 1200m high. On one side of the island the land drops sharply to the sea and gently to a narrow coastal strip on the other.

8 "For such countries--the Maldives, the Solomon Islands, Samoa, Fiji and others--even a small rise in the world’s sea levels could mean not just washed-out sea walls and eroded coastlines but national catastrophe and even extinction"(Filkins, 1997). Many of the Solomon Islands are barely above sea level especially the coral atolls and the raised coral reefs. If global warming continues to melt the polar ice caps, then the Solomon Islanders need to prepare now for a possible disaster. If the predictions of a rise anywhere from 6 inches to 3 feet by 2100 (International Panel on Climate Change) comes true, there must be massive migrations unto safer islands. Although the islands themselves are not producing the dangerous emissions, they are the ones who will pay the price for them. The developed countries like the United States are refusing to cut back the air pollution to the levels asked for by the Pacific Islands.

9 Impacts of Global warming on the Solomon Islands The Solomon Islanders’ main source of income is from fish, timber, palm oil, cocoa, and copra(dried coconut meat). About 80% of the population subsists on fishing and traditional farming, living outside of the cash economy. Japan buys most of the fish and timber from the country. Our country has good shipping services but only has few roads With the water level rising, it could: erodes beaches increases flooding increases the salinity of rivers, bays, and groundwater tables

10 With the water levels increasing, this would affect our fishing and farming, causing our people to suffer. Our population might rapidly decline due to global warming caused in other International countries. We, as a group must strongly oppose to the International countries from causing more global warming, because as a result we, the Pacific Islanders suffer. The International countries such as the United States of America, Australia, Japan and England…etc are producing greenhouse gases that affect us. The temperature rising causing the sea level to rise. The sea levels rising, and making our islands under sea level, forcing our islanders to move. And as I said before, our islands main source of income is from fishing and farming, the sea level rising will cause a considerable amount of income would be lost. Us, the Solomon Islands people, think that the people in International cities should cut down the amount of greenhouse gases that they produce.
