RST: Research Simulation Task

What is it? RSTs require students to produce an extensive piece of writing that uses research to address a significant topic, problem, or issue. RSTs require students to gather and synthesize information from two or more texts or sources in various media or formats on a particular topic or question.

In other words… You will be asked to write an essay that SYSNTHESIZES information from two or more sources on a particular topic, problem or issue.

This week you are going to write your first RST!

“But Ms. Payton…I don’t want to…” “But class! This is the BEST and ONLY way to prepare ourselves for the state test! You will be asked to do this exact assignment, so wouldn’t you rather learn now than learn how to do it on the actual test?”

So let’s begin.. Our RST will be on privilege in America. It will count as a test grade. We have looked at 4 (or 5 if you’re TL 8) sources on Privilege For most Woman and Girls it’s Still a Man’s World. Unpacking the Invisible Backpack. The Power of Privilege Is White Skin Really Fair Skin? Picture Black Girls Rock—Michelle Obama

The prompt is as follows: Class, education, gender, religious affiliation. For centuries, these have all been topics that greatly divide the citizens of the United States of America. Privileged and non-privileged people alike spread the word daily about the advantages for people who enjoy privileges and the disadvantages for people who do not enjoy these special privileges. You have reviewed three sources on this topic regarding the benefits and drawbacks of privilege in America. These three sources provide information to begin drafting your own argument.

Prompt, cont. Does privilege exist as an injustice in our country? Political commentator Bill O’Reilly recently argued that white privilege does not exist, and a popular blog aswedeingerman.com argues that male privilege does not exist—the some advantages that men have over women are mere coincidences. Clearly, there are people who believe that privilege is not a massive injustice in our country. Write a persuasive piece that addresses the question and supports your position with evidence from at least two of the four sources. You may give examples from past and current events or issues to illustrate or clarify your positions.

Still Confused? Let’s answer some questions. Exactly what is the question asking us? What are some KEY WORDS What sources will you use? How will they contribute to your essay?
