3 Viruses ! A virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer. A true virus can spread from one computer to another. Traditional computer virus emerged in the 1980’s, driven by the spread of personal computers and software sharing. Most of the viruses are written in the scripting languages for Microsoft websites such as word or excel. Two very famous viruses were the the Trojan horse virus and the I love you virus. A virus can shut a computer down and as a result it can loose all of some peoples work. A computer virus can stay on the computer virus can stay on the computer of quite a long time. Types of viruses are Resident Viruses, Boot Virus, Macro Virus, Directory Virus, Polymorphic Virus, File Infectors, FAT Virus, Worms, Trojans or Trojan Horses and Logic Bombs

8 Cookies ! A cookie is not a virus It often is mistaken as a virus but as it causes no damage to your computer only clutters it up it is not a virus. SO DON’T GET CONFUSED!

9 What damage can a Virus do ? A virus might ruin or delete data on your computer, use your e-mail program to spread itself to other computers, or even erase everything on your hard disk. - viruses are bad!

10 How can you stop yourself from getting a virus on your computer ? You can protect your computer from viruses by using a few simple email, web browser functions and some anti virus software. The internet can be a fun and exciting place to explore but computer viruses travel around while using it and they can seriously damage your computer. Just like a medical virus a computer Virus can come in all shapes and sizes. Some anti viral software are made for certain viruses.

12 Hacking ! Computer hacking is Unauthorized use of a computer and network resources. Hacking is illegal in most countries but a lot of people still do it It can range from simply hacking into someone’s facebook account to attacking a large company.

13 Examples of hackers ! Gary McKinnon !

14 Gary McKinnon is a British hacker who was arrested for hacking into military and Nasa computers. He claims he wanted to find out about UFO’s and Aliens His actions in 2001 and 2002 caused $800,000 worth of damage. American authorities also accuse him of immobilising sensitive systems in the months following the 9/11 attacks.

15 How to Protect your self from getting hacked ! If you have a good password that is hard to crack you are less at risk to be hacked. This will usually include letters, capitals, numbers and punctuation.

16 B A C K U P S !

17 Back Ups ! You should always back up your work in case something happens and you loose it! Types of back ups can be Putting it on a memory stick, saving it on another computer, flash drives, CD-R/ CD-RW’s ect… If you don’t back up your work you are at a very high risk of loosing important documents. Like my print screens - sorry :)
