VocabularyEnergy is the ability to cause changes in matter and move it.The energy of motion, or energy is use, is kinetic energy.Potential energy is the energy an object has because of where it is or because of its condition. When light bounces of matter it is called reflection.Bending of light rays is called refraction.A lens is a piece of clear material that bends, or refracts, light rays passing through it.Light energy travels in straight lines and moves through air, empty space, and certain other materials, such as water and glass.Objects that transmit light allow the light to pass through them. Some light objects absorb light turning it into the color we see and thermal energy.
Light Waves Light waves are electromagnetic waves. The electromagnetic waves are created by the vibration of electrons in atoms .
Light WavesThere are different types of electromagnetic waves that are produced in the universe.ExamplesRadio wavesMicrowavesInfrared wavesUltraviolet wavesX raysVisible Light
Light Waves in the Electromagnetic Spectrum Light waves move fastest when there is no matter to slow them down, such as in space.Light waves are the only part of the electromagnetic spectrum. We can see them with our eyes.
Eyes Refracting Light Energy Light passes through the lens of your eye.The colored iris opens and closes to let light in through your pupil. The cornea bends lightAn image is created on your retina.
How does light energy react when it encounters matter? Light ray travels in straight lines.Light can travel through empty space.Light can transmit through some kinds of matterPasses easily through gases.Passes through clear objects like glass windows.Sometimes light can be absorbed when it strikes matter.Sometimes it reflects or bounces of an object.Sometimes light energy can refract or bend when traveling through clear substances.
How does light energy react when it encounters matter? Light traveling in straight lines.Matter that’s opaquereflected/bouncedscatteredabsorbedMatter that’s clear and transparentrefractedtransmitted
How does light energy react when it encounters matter? Light strikes an opaque object.Surface is rough and bumpyLight is scattered in all directionsLight is absorbed and turned into thermal energy. The color of the object is reflected/bounced of the object.Surface is smooth and plain. All the light is reflected/bounced.You see an identical image of the image.Light is reflected in an organized manner.
Reflection light of a bumpy rough surface. Visible white ray of light strikes the surface of the object.Part of the light gets absorbed and turns into thermal energy (heat).Only the color of the object reflects/bounces of the surface.
Reflection light of a smooth and plain surface. Visible white ray of light strikes the surface of the object at an angle. The light will be reflected at the same angle that it hit the surface of the object. All light is reflected of the object creating an exact image as the one in front of it.
