2 Part 1: Vocabulary  Remove:  When you remove something, you take it away.  Climb:  Climb means to move up.  Brave:  A brave person does not show fear.  Weight:  A weight is something heavy. Hold On: When you hold on, you do not let go. Lower: When you lower something, you move it down. Pull: Pull means to move something toward you. Tighten: When you tighten your hands on something, you grab it harder.

3 Part 2: Problems & Solutions Tim Smith enjoys playing basketball. One day, the hoops at the basketball park were broken. Now, Tim couldn’t play basketball anymore. He did not know what to do. Tim and a group of his friends decided to get together and raise money to buy new basketball hoops. They did this by making and selling cookies to shoppers at the local mall. They set up a stand and sold them for.50 each. After a few weeks, they raised over $250 for new hoops. Everyone at the park was happy because of this. The park had new basketball hoops and everyone who played there had a nice time.

5 Part 3: Story Questions 1.Who is Rudi? 1.Rudi is the boy who is climbing the mountain alone. 2.Why does he not go into town for help? 2. It would take too long to go to town and come back. The man would be dead by the time he returned. 3.What does Rudi mean when he says, “Don’t lose your head!” 3. “Don’t lose your head” means to stay calm. 4.Why can the man not reach the staff? 4. He can’t reach the staff because he is too far down in the crevasse.

6 Part 3: Story Questions 5.How does Rudi rescue the man? 5. He ties his clothes to his staff and lowers it down the crevasse. 6.Why does he tie his clothes to the staff? 6. Because they will help the man reach the staff. 7.What danger does Rudi face? 7. Rudi can freeze to death or he can fall into the crevasse. 8.Why was the man surprised to see Rudi? 8. The man did not expect Rudi to be just a young boy.

7 Part 4: Pronouns A subject is something that is being discussed. It is the topic of the sentence. --These are usually used at the beginning of the sentence. An object is someone or something involved in the action (the verb). --These are usually used toward the end of the sentence. The subject pronouns are: I, you, he/she/it, we, you, and they. The object pronouns are: me, you, him/her/it, us, you, and them.

8 Part 4: Pronouns **Examples** (Are they subject or object pronouns?) 1.Robert is a rescue worker. He gets a call for help. 2.A biker is hurt. She needs help. 3.Robert’s team goes to him. 4.They put a shirt on the snowman. 5.Workers help them to fix the broken floor.

9 Part 5: Short Answers 1.How do Rudi and the man work together? 2.How does Rudi solve the problem? 3.Was Rudi wise? Or was he foolish? Why? 4.Bravery = Valiente ; Award/Prize = Premio
