Our Human Body-Your human body systems work together to function for the whole (organism).
A system is a whole made up of many parts. Organization in the human body:1) Cell2) Tissue3) Organ4) System5) Organism
I. Nervous SystemFunctions to direct (control) your body’s actions via electrical impulse.Receives & responds to information.Stores & processes information.Maintains homeostasis.Organs: Brain, Spinal Cord
II. Endocrine SystemFunctions to control and regulate your body’s actions by secreting chemicals (hormones).Organs: See image to right-->
III. Digestive SystemFunctions to break down the food you eat to a small enough size for cell entry.Breakdown is mechanical & chemical. Also functions to eliminate waste.Organs: Mouth, esophagus, intestines, stomach … See figure to right
IV. Immune System Functions to combat infection and fight off disease. Organs: See image to right-->
V. Circulatory System Also known as the cardiovascular system. Functions to transport materials to & from all cells of your body.Organs: Heart, arteries, veins, aorta.
VI. Respiratory SystemFunctions to bring oxygen in to your body and remove carbon dioxide waste.Organs: Lungs, trachea, mouth, bronchi
VII. Skin System Functions to cover and protect your body. Regulates body temperature.Senses environment.Removes waste.Produces vitamin D.aka: Integumentary systemOrgans: skin, hair, sweat glands, nails.
VIII. Skeletal System Functions to shape & support your body. Protects organs.Produces blood cells.Stores minerals (Ca2+) & other needed materials.Organs: skull, femur, rib cage, sternum and all other bones.
IX. Muscular System Functions to provide movement. Organs: biceps, triceps, deltoids…
X. Reproductive SystemFunctions to allow humans to mix their genetics through sexual reproduction, thus making unique offspring
XI. Excretory System Functions to filter and eliminate liquid waste. Also removes excess water.Organs: see image to right -->
How does your stomach work with other systems? Smooth muscles contract to move food along your digestive tract. [peristalsis]Blood vessels deliver oxygen to stomach cells. (circulatory)Strong acids kill off harmful pathogens, thus improving immunity.
How does your liver work with multiple systems? Makes bile for digestion of fats.Breaks down medicines to support immunity.Filters blood from circulation.
How do your bones work with other systems? Bone marrow produces blood cells (circulatory).Bones attach to skeletal muscle for movement.Bones protect vital organs, i.e. brain (Nervous).
