When a writer will simply tell readers that a character is amusing, evil, dull, brave, etc., it is called direct characterization. Literary Elements Most often, though, writers will use indirect characterization to reveal the personality of characters. Indirect characterization is when The author shows us the personality traits rather than tells us.

When a writer uses indirect characterization, we must use our own judgment to decide what the character is like, based on the evidence the writer gives us.
