The link between health and academics in our region 2011-2012 EUP High School Students MIPHY Data
The Following Data Slides look at 2011-2012 EUP MIPHY Data from High School Students. Understanding the following data graphs… Represents Students that answered yes, who also regularly receive A or B grades Represents Students that answered yes, who also regularly receive D or F grades *All numbers are Percentages
Why K-12 Prevention? Michigan Model® and Physical Ed. Were physically active for 60 minutes, 5 of the last 7 days Took diet pills or powders w/o Dr. to lose weight Are obese (a BMI in the 95 th percentile or greater)
Why K-12 Prevention? Michigan Model® and Nutrition Services Had 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetable a day, in the past week Drank at least 1 can/bottle of soda pop each day in the past week DID NOT have breakfast in the past week
Why K-12 Prevention? Michigan Model®, Take the Challenge (Screen Turn Off Program) Play 3 or more hours of video or computer games on an average school day Watch 3 or more hours of TV on an average school day
Why K-12 Prevention? School-Based and School-linked Health Services Have seen a doctor or health provider for a check-up when they were NOT sick or injured, in the past 12 months

EUPISD PECRT What is a PECRT? Physical Education Curriculum Review Team What does a CRT do? Creates the region wide curriculum by studying best practices, identifying curriculum gaps/weaknesses, filling gaps, entering and analyzing data, sharing strategies used in the classroom, joining forces on external programming (Jump Rope for Heart, Walking Clubs), guiding grant writing (PEP Grant) How often does the CRT meet? 7 meetings a year. The school pays for ½ sub and ISD pays other ½ out of REAP funds (Rural Education Assistance Program). Approximately 4 CEUs are offered to anyone who attends at least 6 meetings!
A local data example In this example we have: A local District, which we will call EUP School Looking at 4 th graders that were tested on Fitness AND took the MEAP Weeded down, makes 79 4 th Graders Purpose: comparing proficiency in Fitness as it is correlated to proficiency in academics.
Setting the scene EUP FITNESS proficiency for 4 th graders was defined as: Aerobic: 11 minutes, or less, mile run Curl-Ups: 32, or more, in 1 minute And Push-Ups: 12 push-ups, or more
