3 Training in the Workplace… What’s it all about? What is training? In the workplace? Why would we train? Training in the Workplace BTEC National Level 3

4 Review Training in the Workplace BTEC National Level 3 What is training? Is it different to learning? Not really but it is often linked to specific vocations rather than simply the acquisition of knowledge for its own sake. What do we mean by “workplace” – place of work in all sorts of different contexts and environments. Have you understood what we will be studying?

6 Organisational level: strategic objectives eg increase profit, increase turnover, become market leader; operational objectives (increase productivity, introduce new technology, improve health and safety, create a more flexible workforce, introduce succession training for promotion, improve job performance and motivation); satisfy UK and EU legislation or standards e.g. Investors in People status Departmental level: departmental objectives (sales targets, customer service improvements); job/role changes; team changes; new equipment; new procedures; new products/services; new technology; new range of clients Individual level: appraisal/perform ance review; promotion; change of job role; individual needs Name 3 Levels What reasons can you come up with for each level?

7 An introduction… Role play Acting as a careers adviser, interview each other in pairs, to find out what type of work you’d like to do. Discover each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and explore opportunities for careers. Prepare a set of questions which you think will elicit the best results and make sure you record (audio, video, pen & paper, or direct input) and write up your findings including both the questions and answers.
