**Scientific Notation And Significant Digits**

Objective: to use scientific notation and significant digits

2
Scientific notation A number expressed in the form of n × 10x where 1 < n < 10 and x is an element of the integers Example 2.3 × 103

3
**Example change into scientific notation**

429,000,000 4.29 × 108 move the decimal 8 places to the left 7.05 × 104 move the decimal 4 places to the right

4
Significant digits Number of digits that have a purpose other than a place holder Examples: 21000 has 2 significant digits has 4 significant digits 2.10 × 104 has 3 significant digits has 2 significant digits

5
**Try These! Write each number in scientific notation**

103,000 (5.03 × 10-3)(3.32 × 105) 1.03 × 105 2.1 × 10-3 1.003 × 102 3 × 105 solution × 103 solution End Show

(5.03 × 10-3)(3.32 × 105) (5.03 × 3.32)(10-3 × 105) × 102 × 103 Try These!
