2 ACCELERATING CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH www.indianactsi.org What is Community Health Engagement Program? It is a component of the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI), funded from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Indiana University in collaboration with Purdue and Notre Dame, has created CHEP to help assist researchers in translating research findings to the Indiana community by engaging the community to participate in research opportunities.

4 ACCELERATING CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH www.indianactsi.org CHEP has a consortium of over 200 community partners that comprise our Community Advisory Council (CAC). CAC is working to improve the health of Hoosiers. Community organizations/ residents Researchers Community health providers

6 ACCELERATING CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH www.indianactsi.org CTSI IAC CAC AAG EAG CEB CHEP CCC CCC – Community Coordinating Committee This committee began by organizing CHEP and will continue to be a liaison between the CAC and the rest of the CTSI structure. CAC – Community Advisory Council The CAC is a collection of community organizations that comprise CHEP CEB – Community Executive Board The CEB is a subset of the CAC that organizes the CAC and its Action Groups, and advises the entire CTSI concerning community matters. AAG – Ad Hoc Action Group AAGs are short-term groups that are organized to achieve an immediate goal such as organizing a particular study in a community. EAG – Enduring Action Group EAGs are long-term groups composed of CAC members who perform a function that is ongoing. The IU IRB is an example of an EAG. CHEP Structure

7 ACCELERATING CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH www.indianactsi.org EDUCATION AND TRAINING CHEP provides education and training opportunities to enhance research with community partners. COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES CHEP facilitates collaboration between researchers and community partners with similar interests. CONSULTATION SERVICES CHEP assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of community engaged research protocols. PRACTICE BASED RESEARCH NETWORKS CHEP links researchers to Practice Based Research Networks for recruitment assistance. ACCESS TO PARTNERS CHEP provides researchers access to a network of over 200 local community members and researchers, including underserved populations who are interested in project collaboration. 8 ACCELERATING CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH www.indianactsi.org Resources provided by CHEP 1.Training Workshops and online presentations e.g.: practical steps to start your CBPR,effective communication, cultural sensitivity, Research strategic Planning, and much more… 2.Access to community organizations: community contact database and recruitment help 3.Assessment of community needs 4.Networking with Community leaders and experienced researchers (who participated or managed CBPR before)

Input on community conditions to inform intervention design and execution Help with interpretation of results, identifying needed interventions and evaluating outcomes of an intervention. Accessibility to community resources that support intervention work, e.g.: Bus passes, Community resource audits, and Community health promotion plans Improved community education/health literacy – Health information well received/better understood. Improved translation of scientific findings to the community
