Eruptions and Forms of Volcanoes
Types of Eruptions Violent and explosive Quiet and flowingDepends on trapped gases and magma composition
Trapped Gases Water vapor and carbon dioxide are trapped in magmaAt low pressure, they escape quietly when they reach the surface At high pressure, they escape violently when they reach the surface
Magma Composition Two types:Basaltic – less silica and very fluid; produces quiet eruptions Granitic – lots of silica, high water vapor content, and very thick; produces very violent eruptions
Forms of Volcanoes Three forms: Shield Cinder Cone Composite
Shield Volcano Formed by quiet eruptionsBasaltic lava builds up in flat layers Gently sloping sides Ex: Hawaiian Islands
Cinder Cone Volcano Caused by explosive eruptionsGranitic lava thrown high into the air Lava cools into different sizes of volcanic material called tephra Steep-sided, loose slopes
Composite Volcano A mix of the other two types Quiet or violentBasaltic or granitic Steep or gentle slopes Layered or tephra
The Parts of a Volcano.
Types of Volcanoes Chapter 11 Section 2.
Let’s Review… Copy in Notebook and Answer:
Ch. 18 Volcanoes.
Section 18.1 Volcanoes Types of Volcanoes
What Controls Volcanic Eruptions?
Volcano Types (39) Volcanoes are either explosive of non explosive.
Volcanic activity Pg. 89.
Bell Ringer Where are volcanoes found?. I can describe different types of volcanoes.
Volcanoes Volcanoes occur most frequently at plate boundaries. Some volcanoes occur in the interior of plates in areas called hot spots. Most of Earth’s.
Chapter 9 Volcanoes. 9.1 What causes volcanoes? Volcano: an opening in the Earth’s surface which forms a mountain when layers of ash & lava build up.
Making Connections with New Stuff 1. 3 types of volcanoes 2. Volcanoes and the formation of Early Earth 3. Minerals, Rocks, and the Rock Cycle 4. Divergent.
Chapter 10 Volcanoes.
Volcanoes are classified by: Their shape The way they erupt The materials from which they are formed.
VOLCANOES Earth’s Fiery Release B56a. VOLCANO mountain produced by repeated eruptions –magma rises to the surface because it is less dense than the surrounding.
Volcanic Landforms. Types of Volcanoes Cinder Cone Shield Composite.
Earth Science Notes Volcano Types
Volcano Explosions and Types. What causes different types of explosions? Trapped gases: Trapped gases: – Water vapor and carbon dioxide can be trapped.
