Positions Goalie (“Keeper”): The only player, on each team, that is allowed to touch the ball with their hands while the ball is in play. They must stay inside the penalty box when the ball is in their hands. Fullbacks (CB, RB, LB):A defender’s task is to prevent opposing attackers from passing or receiving, especially to keep them from scoring.

Positions (cont.) Midfielders/ Halfbacks: Midfielders link the offense and the defense: they bring the ball up to the forwards and prevent the ball from reaching the defenders. They basically play offense and defense which requires a lot of running.

Positions (cont.) Forwards: They spend their time on the other team’s half trying to score goals. They may not run as much as midfielders but they have a lot of pressure on them to convert good passes into goals for their team.

RULES No pushing, shoving or tripping. …no slide tackling either. A handball will result in a free kick for the other team. “A handball occurs if any player, other than the team’s goalkeeper within his own penalty area, deliberately handles the ball when in play. A ball can be handled with any part of the arm, from the tips of a player’s fingers right up to the shoulder.” (http://www.livestrong.com/article/123838-fifa-soccer- rules-handball/)http://www.livestrong.com/article/123838-fifa-soccer- rules-handball/ When a team is awarded a free kick, the other team must back up 10 yards.

Rules (cont.) On a kickoff, the opposing team must be outside the center circle until the ball is kicked. The kickoff must go forward and someone else has to touch it before the kicker can touch it again. Kickoffs occur at the beginning of a game, after each score, and to start the second half. During goal kicks, players must wait until the ball clears the penalty box before making contact with it. A handball that occurs by the defense in their own penalty box will result in a penalty kick for the other team. Only the goalie can try and block the kick.
