2  The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought December 11–15, 1862, in and around Fredericksburg, Virginia, between General Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and the Union Army of the Potomac, commanded by Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside. The Union army's useless frontal attacks on December 13 against entrenched Confederate defenders on the heights behind the city is remembered as one of the most one-sided battles of the American Civil War, with Union casualties more than twice as heavy as those suffered by the Confederates.

3  In May and June of 1863, Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s armies converged on Vicksburg. On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered after prolonged siege operations. This was the culmination of one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war. With the loss of Confederate army and this vital stronghold on the Mississippi, the Confederacy was effectively split in half.  Grant's successes in the West boosted his reputation, leading ultimately to his appointment as General-in-Chief of the Union armies.  The Union victories in Gettysburg and Vicksburg ON THE SAME DAY, is considered the Turning Point of the Civil War
