6 th Grade Math Focus 2: Rates, including percent Standards: 6.RP.2, 6.RP3b, 6.RP.3c Resource: Fosnot- Best Buys, Ratios, and Rates Addition and Subtraction of Fractions The Price of Birdseed

Lesson Purpose and Overview  The use of landmark fractions that can be visualized using money.  You will then begin a new investigation involving the pricing of birdseed sold at Bob’s Best Buys.  You will be asked to determine the cost of various bags priced by weight, including bags customers might fill themselves.

Today’s Learning Target Students will be able to use landmark fractions to visualize money models when adding certain fractions.

Today’s Learning Target Scale 4 I understand landmark fractions thoroughly. I can confidently use what I have learned. I can help others understand it. 3 Students will be able to use landmark fractions to visualize money models when adding and subtracting certain fractions. 2 I have a basic understanding of landmark fractions and how they relate to money models. I’ve identified a few questions that I’ll need to have answered before I can correct add or subtract fractions using this strategy. 1 I have some understanding of some parts of landmark fractions but I do not understand how they relate to money models or how to use them to solve addition or subtraction of fractions. 0 I do not understand landmark fractions. I do not know how to add or subtract fractions.

Do you recognize these fellas? 1.What do these coins represent? (A)MORE THAN a dollar? (B)EQUAL to a dollar? (C)LESS THAN a dollar? They represent LESS THAN a whole dollar!

How much LESS THAN a whole dollar do these coins represent?  What is the amount of each coin?  How many of each coin does it take to make a WHOLE dollar?  Write each coin as a PART to WHOLE ratio.

These are Landmark Fractions! Money allows you to convert common fractions into whole numbers (cents/coins), operate with them whole numbers, and then convert them back to fractions of a dollar!

How to use Landmark Fractions when adding and subtracting fractions? + + $0.25 + $0.05

Practice with Landmark Fractions!

Making Connections Using Landmark Fractions to Find the Price of Birdseed

Bob’s Best Buys

At Bob’s Best Buys you can scoop your own mixture of birdseed and weight it. He sells it by the pound. Bob also sells packaged birdseed with the weight marked on the bag. ~Some customers prefer to make their own mixture; others buy the packaged sizes. ~Some customers buy large bags because they have large yards with many bird feeders. ~Other people prefer to buy small bags for a pet. At the checkout, Bob weights the bag and charges by the pound. The problem is that most customers want to know the price before they get to the checkout. Bob would like to post a chart that would tell people the price once they know the weight.

Chart of Birdseed Quantities and Corresponding Prices Bob sells five pounds for $8.00 and he charges the same rate no matter how much you buy- there are no discounts for larger quantities. Bob sells bags packaged at the following weights: ¼, ¾, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, and 90 pounds Customers also need to know the price for other weights that they scoop themselves. Make a chart that Bob can use in his store.
