2 Drill 9/4 Basket Items! Homework: Add at least one example sentence for each part of speech in the flip book. Objective: Students will determine what function a word serves within a sentence in order to explain how words are classified grammatically. Drill: Identify the adverb and the adjective in the following sentence. ◦ The mighty Maryland Terrapins narrowly defeated the weaker William and Mary yesterday.

5 Drill 9/7 Homework: Study for grammar quiz on 9/10, (That is Monday) Objective: The students will review parts of speech and sentence structure in order to improve sentence fluency. Drill: Take out your sentence notes and parts of speech flip book. Review for quiz. Use the word “because” or “since” to write a complex sentence.

6 9/6 answer Prepositional Phrase: Shows location and time. Begins with a preposition and ends with a noun. Appositive Phrase: Renames the noun. Set off by commas. Participial Phrase: Verb used as an adjective. Ends in –ing or –ed Infinitive Phrase: The word “to” plus a verb. Used as a noun, adjective, or adverb. Absolute Phrase: Modifies the rest of the sentence. Begins with a personal pronoun and is set off with commas.

Drill: 1. Discuss the elements of plot with your table. 2.Cut out the names and definitions of plot. 3.Glue the names and definitions on the yellow plot chart in the correct order. 4.You may write out the information if you do not want to cut and glue.

Objective: Students will demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking in order to communicate effectively. Drill: Write down the homework. 24 First Person: The speaker is I. Told from the point of view of one person in the story. Second Person: The speaker is you. Third Person: The speaker or narrator tells the point of view of one character. Third Person Omniscient: Speaker knows what all characters are thinking and feeling. What is the point of view of “The Most Dangerous Game”--Support your answer with information from the text.

41 Drill 10/18 Homework: Review literary terms from folders. Objective: Students will acquire and use literary terms vocabulary in order to discuss the literature. Category A Drill: Take out your rubric, final, draft, and organizer. Complete the first question on the reflection sheet. Staple it all together with the rubric on top.

42 Drill 10/22 Homework: “Scarlet Ibis” and literary terms vocabulary quiz 10/25. Vocabulary handout Objective: Students will develop prior knowledge in order to understand “the Scarlet Ibis.” Drill: Answer in two to three complete sentences. Have you ever wanted something very badly only to be disappointed when you got your wish? How did you react to the disappointment?

43 Drill 10/23 Take out your vocabulary sheet. Homework: “Scarlet ibis” and literary terms vocabulary quiz 10/25. Objective: Students will develop prior knowledge in order to read “The Scarlet Ibis.” Drill: Answer in two to three complete sentences. Can you imagine what it might feel like to be embarrassed or ashamed of someone you care about? How do you react when you are embarrassed by someone you love? How might it feel to know that others are embarrassed by you?

44 Drill 10/24 Homework: Vocabulary quiz tomorrow Objective: Students will determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text. Category A Drill: Take a piece of paper and fold it into four columns. In the first column write down all the vocabulary words.

45 Pop Quiz Read the following quote. Decide if the quote is an example of foreshadowing, imagery, or irony. Explain what the author is trying to tell the reader. 1. “The old charts call it Ship-Trap Island,” Whitney replied. “A suggestive name, isn’t it? Sailors have a curious dread of the place. 46 Drill 10/25 Homework: Review Literary Terms Objective: Students will determine a theme of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text. Drill: Take out your vocabulary words and literary terms notes. Review quietly for five minutes before the quiz. Put your name, date, period, and Ibis Vocabulary Quiz on the scantron.

47 Drill 10/26 Homework: Complete the theme BCR in the Ibis packet. Make sure all the questions are answered. Due Monday. Objective: Students will analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision. Drill: Make sure you have completely answered all of the questions in the “Ibis” packet. You may work with your reading teams—category B.

48 Drill 10/30 Homework: Verb Tenses Practice pg.114- 115 Verb Tense Quiz 11/2 Objective: Students will reflect on their writing in order to develop and strengthen their writing as needed. Drill: Take out your literary terms folder. Match the examples with each of the terms. Write the examples and page numbers on your folder.

49 Drill 10/31 Homework: Complete the outline and first paragraph of your argument essay. Objective: Students will organize claims and introduce the supports logically in order to write arguments with clear reasons and evidence. Category A Drill: Regret handout. Write in the present tense.

50 Drill 11/1 Homework: Complete draft of paper Objective: Students will plan, revise, and edit in order to develop and strengthen writing as needed. Drill: Take out your outline and first paragraph. Proof read for ideas (did you answer the question) and usage (present tense).

51 Drill 11/2 Homework: Final draft of paper due 11/7. Objective: Students will, with the help of peers plan, revise, and edit in order to develop and strengthen writing as needed. Drill: Review for verb tense quiz. Complete the scantron with name, date, period, verb tense quiz.
