1
Adding and Subtracting Integers

2
When adding integers, remember the following pneumonic devices: L A S S U S B

3
Adding Like Terms (LASS) -6 + (-8) Like signs, so simply Add -6 + (-8) Like signs, so simply Add = 14, and then keep the same sign = 14, and then keep the same sign - Adding Unlike Terms (USB) 6 + (-8) Unlike signs, so Subtract 8 - 6 2 -= 2 Then keep the sign of the Bigger number

4
Lets Practice Click on the correct answer. 1. -5 + 3 = a. 2 b. -2 c. 8 d. -8

5
Sorry! Try again Try againTry again

6
Youve done it! Lets ride right on to the next one. Youve done it! Lets ride right on to the next one. next one next one

7
2. 4 + (-3) a. 1 a. 1 b. -1 c. 7 d. -7

8
Sorry, DudeMaybe you need new glasses! Try Again

9
HIYA! Way to Go! On to the next one! next one

10
3. -8 + (-3) = a. 5 a. 5 b. -5 c. 11 d. -11

11
Aw! Come on! Dont look so sad! You can try again! try again!

12
Youve unlocked the right door! Now on to subtracting integers

13
Subtracting Integers When you subtract integers, its easy to remember the following: COPY, CHANGE, CHANGE

14
4 – 9 Copy the first number 4+(-9) Change the minus sign to addition Change the second number to its opposite (sign) Now you are adding unlike signs (USB), so subtract 9 - 4 And Keep the sign of the bigger number = 5 -

15
More Practice 4. 2 – 10 = a. 8 b. -8 c. 12 d. -12

16
Lets not run out of steam here! You can give it another shot! another shot

17
Youre blasting off! Way to go!! Blast your way to the next one!next one

18
5. -5 - 15 a. 10 a. 10 b. -10 c. 20 d. -20

19
It looks like youve got more work to do! Sorry, try again!try again

20
Way to Go!! Youre #1 Now on to #6on to #6

21
6. 10 – (-4) a. 6 a. 6 b. -6 c. 14 d. -14

22
OOPS! An empty locker! Try againTry again!
