Ana Jiménez © Basic Math: Keeping the Focus on Fractions Ana Jiménez Saturday, November 3, 2007 1:15 pm - 2:05 pm

10/12/2015 Why are Fractions so Difficult? Understanding Rules Avoidance

10/12/2015 Methods Used Assigned a Fraction Mastery Test, worth 10% of the student’s overall grade Presented the material differently from the order of the class textbook

10/12/2015 Fraction Mastery Test Worth 10% of the student’s grade Grading scale: 85% or better = 10pts 70 – 84% = 5 pts less than 70% = 0 pts. Students had several opportunities to take computer regenerated versions

10/12/2015 Fraction Mastery Test

10/12/2015 Methods Used Assigned a Fraction Mastery Test, worth 10% of the student’s overall grade Presented the material differently from the order of the class textbook

10/12/2015 Order of Presentation Day 1: Introducing Whole Numbers, Fractions, and DecimalsIntroducing Whole Numbers, Fractions, and Decimals Day 2: Adding and SubtractingAdding and Subtracting Day 3: MultiplicationMultiplication Day 4: DivisionDivision Day 5: Back to Addition and SubtractionBack to Addition and Subtraction

10/12/2015 Order of Presentation Day 1: Introducing Whole Numbers, Fractions, and Decimals all together Introducing Whole Numbers, Fractions, and Decimals

10/12/2015 Sample Lecture Notes – Day 1

10/12/2015 Order of Presentation Day 2: Adding and Subtracting whole numbers, decimals & fractionsAdding and Subtracting Rule: "You can only Add and Subtract Like Terms"

10/12/2015 Sample Lecture Notes – Day 2

10/12/2015 Order of Presentation Day 3: Multiplication of whole numbers, decimals & fractionsMultiplication

10/12/2015 Sample Lecture Notes – Day 3

10/12/2015 Order of Presentation Day 4: Division of whole numbers, decimals and fractionsDivision

10/12/2015 Sample Lecture Notes – Day 5

10/12/2015 Order of Presentation Day 5: Back to Addition and Subtraction so we could look at Unlike Fractions and how to make them “Like”Back to Addition and Subtraction

10/12/2015 Results What I would do differently Prerequisite Worksheet Computerized Mastery Test Student Scores Percentage of students scoring fraction portion of the final exam correct: 75%

10/12/2015 Student Feedback “… I TRUELY UNDERSTOOD WHAT YOU WERE TEACHING AND BECAUSE YOU INTRODUCED EVERYTHING TOGETHER ON THE FIRST DAY AND THEN INCORPORATED THE ADDING, SUBTRACTING, AND SO ON, I FEEL IT MADE FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE MATERIAL. EVEN NOW, IN MY OTHER MATH CLASSES, I USE THE NOTES FROM YOUR CLASS.”

10/12/2015 Give One Get One Fill in three boxes with ideas of your own. Get up and start to mingle among your peers who are standing and get ideas for all the other boxes. Each time you interact with a different person, GIVE ONE – of your ideas – and GET ONE. Get that person to write their name in the box. When you have completed all nine boxes, return to your seat. Go for it!

10/12/2015 Q & A During the presentation, a question came up and I didn't have the answer. Here is the follow-up: Q: What textbook do you use? A: I did this in both the fall and summer semesters of 2006. In the fall I used Elementary and Intermediate Algebra, 4 th Edition by Bittinger, Ellenbogen, Johnson (2006) and in the summer I used Basic College Mathematics, 5 th Edition by Tobey and Slater (2005)
