Agenda For Today! Welcome/Housekeeping Reviewing Progress of the SIP PlanSchool Report Out of Progress with Action Research (presentations/sharing from schools)08-09 ARDT Plans (for next year)Team Time (planning for the SIP)
Action Research Overview for Professional Learning Communities Pre Planning: Identification of Need1. Develop/Review Student Learning Expectations2. Examine alignment of learning expectations with assessments3. Review assessment data4. Identify areas of need based on assessmentPlan:1. Describe the current process for addressing the identified area of need (flow chart)2. Review data to determine baseline performance in the specific area identified(Run Chart/Pareto Diagram)3. Identify potential root causes contributing to the identified area of need(Cause & Effect Diagram, 5 Why’s, Relations Diagram)4. Study research-based best practice/improvement theory addressing areas of needAction ResearchOverviewforProfessionalLearning CommunitiesDO1. Plan for implementation of improvement theory (Force Field Analysis, Action Plan)2. Implement research-based best practices improvement theory based on root causes according to the Action Plan3. Monitor the implementation of research-based best practice/improvement theory to insure integrity and fidelity 4. Assess student learningAct:1. Standardize the implementation of research-based best practice (improvement theory) that improved student learning (revise the flow chart to reflect changes made to the system)2. If improvement theory was unsuccessful continue the PDSA cycle (try another improvement theory based on the next identified root causes)Study:1. Examine student assessment results (compare to baseline)2. Assess the impact of research-based best practice/improvement theory on student achievement
Professional Learning Community Model Focus on Learning rather than TeachingWork CollaborativelyHold yourself accountable for the results
PLC Crucial Questions What do we want each student to learn? What evidence do we have of the learning? How will we respond when some students don’t learn?
Reviewing Progress of the 07-08 SIP Plan SIP RubricSIP End of Year Review
Meet By Goal Area1. Share the SMART goal & any in-process measures the team used to track progress2. Discuss PDSA progressWhich steps of PDSA did you complete/focus on?3. What went well? What worked? Why?4. What did your team struggle with? Why?5. What would you change or do differently next year?

Return to your school’s table to report back… Discuss…-What did you learn?-What were some similarities & differences?-What will your team do differently next year?
Elementary SchoolsCommon SMART goal for all schools:By June 2009, all elementary classrooms in the Cedar Rapids Community School District will implement the District literacy program with integrity and fidelity as measured by classroom walkthroughs and teacher self-assessments.
Measurement of Goal Measure Target Date Classroom Walkthroughs- % Classrooms ObservedPercent of K-5 classrooms observed (3rd observation)100%By 6/5/09Classroom Walkthroughs- % Implementation of ProgramPercent of program implementation in K-5 classroomsTeacher Self-Assessment of literacy programPercent of literacy program implemented (per teacher)
Changes to ARDT…In place of the traditional ARDT workshops that have occurred the last several years, resources will be devoted to the successful implementation of the District Literacy program.Reading implementation teams from each school will meet 4 times during the yearMath & SEB teams will continue to use PDSA and SMART goals (but won’t attend District ARDT sessions)

Team Time… Plan the 2008-09 SIP: Use information gathered today from:the “SIP End of Year Review”“SIP Rubric”Notes from the SIP Goal Area discussionsUse the “organizing and planning for continuous improvement” worksheetUpdate your school’s SIP and discuss key changes/recommendations for next year
