2 What is Plagiarism? Stealing someone elses work and claiming it as your own Sometimes we do this without thinking This is LITERARY THEFT! So, … how can we avoid this habit?

3 Learn how To Take Notes!!

4 You take notes so you will,… Remember what you read Not copy someone elses exact words Be able to put the information in your own words later Why Take Notes?

5 Rules for Note Taking

6 Rule 1: Decide how you will take notes. Will you,… Make lists? Use a graphic organizer? Use note cards? Create a web? Use another method?

7 Rule 2: Read Carefully!

8 Rule 3: Writing EVERYTHING is TOO HARD!, So,…

9 Rule 4: Look Away From the Text!

10 Rule 5: Focus and Think! What is important about what you are writing?

11 Outline Rule 6: Write only important details,….but

12 Rule 7: Write clearly. If you cant read it later, it wont do you any good!

13 Rule 8 : Finally and most importantly, put the notes in your own words and Make the changes needed so that the work is your own!

14 To summarize: Decide how you will take notes. Read carefully! Look away from text! Focus and Think! Outline! Write clearly! Put the notes in your own words!

15 Some Note-taking ideas: Make lists Highlight important ideas on a printed page Use graphic organizers Make notes on 3 x 5 cards and organize in a pocket chart or on a table top Use lined notebook paper Draw a chart and fill it in Create a web Use a tape recorder, then transcribe the words into written form Use Inspiration or Kidspiration to organize your thoughts
