What is Plagiarism? Stealing someone elses work and claiming it as your own Sometimes we do this without thinking This is LITERARY THEFT! So, … how can we avoid this habit?

You take notes so you will,… Remember what you read Not copy someone elses exact words Be able to put the information in your own words later Why Take Notes?
Rules for Note Taking
Rule 1: Decide how you will take notes. Will you,… Make lists? Use a graphic organizer? Use note cards? Create a web? Use another method?
Rule 2: Read Carefully!
Rule 3: Writing EVERYTHING is TOO HARD!, So,…
Rule 4: Look Away From the Text!
Rule 5: Focus and Think! What is important about what you are writing?
Outline Rule 6: Write only important details,….but
Rule 7: Write clearly. If you cant read it later, it wont do you any good!
Rule 8 : Finally and most importantly, put the notes in your own words and Make the changes needed so that the work is your own!

Some Note-taking ideas: Make lists Highlight important ideas on a printed page Use graphic organizers Make notes on 3 x 5 cards and organize in a pocket chart or on a table top Use lined notebook paper Draw a chart and fill it in Create a web Use a tape recorder, then transcribe the words into written form Use Inspiration or Kidspiration to organize your thoughts
