The origin of the name manganese comes from the ancient city of magnesia or what is now known as present day Greece. The element maganese was originally seperated by gender, The male (magnes) attracted iron, and was the iron ore we now know as lodestone or magnetite. On the other hand The female (magnes) ore did not attract iron, but was used to decolorize glass. This feminine magnes was later called magnesia, now known as pyrolusite or manganese dioxide.

Manganese is a pinkish-gray active element that was discovered by Johan Gahn in manganese is a hard metal and is very brittle.
