2 Know: The Intervals AQA require you to aurally recognise and utilise. Understand: How intervals and ornamentation are use in composition Be able to: Compose and perform a selection of intervals and ornaments. *Make a point that we’ve already done Major and Minor.

3 WHAT IS AN INTERVAL? The distance between 2 notes. The same thing as a tone or a semitone except you can move more than a tone… Use the virtual keyboard and start on C to show what intervals are. QUESTION: Why do you need to know Intervals?

4 INTERVALS YOU NEED TO KNOW The good news is that in the listening exam you only have to know 4 intervals. So, when I was at school I came up with a way of figuring these intervals out when I heard them so that’s what we’re gonna do now!

9 Ornamentation TRILL = Rapid movement back & forth between the note. C D C D C D C D C D TASK: Perform above then Add a trill on the end of happy birthday ACCIACCATURA Sometimes called a grace note, it’s a very quick note played before the main one. TASK: Perform an Acciaccatura before the first 4 notes of Somewhere over the Rainbow. PITCH BEND String instruments can bend the strings to increase the pitch. TASK: Add pitch bend to here comes the bride. Instead of playing G bend up from an F.

10 TASK: Clap this rhythm TASK: Add pitch to the rhythm. You may only use a Major 2 nd, perfect 4 th, Perfect 5 th and an Octave. TASK: Perform it!
