4 Third Country Cooperation Original mission and vision of the tropEd network – spanning Europe with Africa, Asia and Latin America Main focus of “International Health“ Mutual learning process, adaptation of teaching styles and learning approaches, research opportunities Balanced cooperation on equal terms

5 Third Country Cooperation: Challenges Language (China, Thailand) for field research and background reading Student finances: Cheaper to study in Europe in spite of EM scholarship (European subsidies) Varying quality of tutoring and supervision Intercultural challenges increase time originally allocated for academic work

6 Third Country Cooperation: Challenges Fee transparency, e.g. extra fees for books, internet, library use etc. Differences in academic quality standards: –Course assessments –Thesis requirements (desk study vs. field work) –Thesis assessment (formal vs. content) –Thesis defense as feedback session

7 Development of European Student Mobility Quality assurance of course provision through the network (peer review) Focus on learning objectives and assessment procedures ECTS easily translated into other credit systems English language Recognition of joint degrees: A long way to go …

8 Recommendations Increase scholarships for European students, e.g. bonus payment Hold regional joint ToT workshops / seminars to discuss: –Curriculum development –Learning styles and methods –Asessment procedures –Quality assurance in HE –Recognition and legal issues re: joint degrees
