To Know the Contents. Worthy person sought to open scroll. John old, in exile, waits with bated breath -wept when none found. Told that the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Root of David had prevailed. ‘Prevailed’ same word as ‘overcome.’

Jesus is Worthy to Open. 5:5 By birth, Lion of Judah, lawgiver & King. Offspring of David - to sit on his throne. David’s Lord “root and offspring of David.” Representative of His Father. Sits upon God’s Throne. Has Overcome. Hence is worthy to open the scroll.

“Lamb, as it had been slain”. 5:6 John looks - sees slain lamb not King. Seven horns - symbol of power. Eyes for sight and intelligence. Seven symbolises completeness. Seven horns and seven eyes symbolise omnipotence and omniscience - said to be the seven spirits of God.

Jesus Takes Scroll. 5:7 In Symbol Jesus sits as King on Throne and also is the Lamb, receiving scroll as Redeemer - he is both King & Priest. Having prevailed has been granted knowledge of God’s purpose previously hidden from him. Having received scroll is in control of rest of God’s plan.

The Redeemed with Harps. 5:8,9 Expression of homage follows symbolised by harps. Mind impressed with the Word, heart full of thanksgiving causes the “saint-harp” to be instrument of pleasure to God. 5:10 Golden vials full of odours symbolise state of prayer during mortal life of probation - in hope of future - “we shall reign on the earth.”

Universal Praise. 5:11 Those gathered around Throne - “ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands...” - a countless number. The opening of the seals by Jesus is the beginning of his work - the adoration by the countless multitude is the culmination of it. In symbol both are shown as happening together - not descriptive of actual occurrence.
