4. How does this happen? By providing a suitable work programme for each child and encouraging children to be independent learners and thinkers. By giving clear guidelines regarding work and behaviour. By working in partnership with parents to help your child achieve their potential.

5. Literacy Reading and reading related skills Phonics – through active learning Common words – reading and spelling Handwriting – linked script Writing – VCOP programme

6. Helping with Reading Hear your child read aloud encouraging expression, where appropriate. Discuss the text with him/her. Ask questions about the characters, setting and events. Take time to complete both sides of the Activity card. Encourage children to read other stories independently.

7. Helping with Writing Encourage your child to use good punctuation and interesting vocabulary. Encourage good pencil grasp and the correct use of lines in the Homework jotter. Focus on correct formation of letters, as we begin linked script in Primary 2.

8. Numeracy Addition and subtraction to 20. Numbers to 100. Measure, shape and handling data. Multiplication and division.

9. Helping with Maths Practise: o Number bonds to 10 and 20. o Language of addition and subtraction o Odd and even numbers. o Counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s. Complete Parent Prompts to help children see relevance of maths in ‘real’ situations. Please retain and revisit throughout the year. Checking/supervising homework.
