A Hero? Why King David?

2 Samuel 12 The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, 3 but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. (NIV)

“Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.” (2 Samuel 12: 4 NIV) “Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.” (2 Samuel 12: 4 NIV)

David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, “As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this must die! 6 He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.” David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, “As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this must die! 6 He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.” (2 Samuel 12: 5-6 NIV)

Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! “

9 Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’ (2 Samuel 12: 9-10 NIV)

Notice that David’s judgment was carried out: “ He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.” (2 Samuel 12: 6 NIV) David lost 4 of his own children

2 Samuel 23:1, 8 1 These are the last words of David: “The inspired utterance of David son of Jesse, the utterance of the man exalted by the Most High, the man anointed by the God of Jacob, the hero of Israel’s songs: 8 These are the names of David’s mighty warriors: Josheb- Basshebeth, a Tahkemonite,... [And the list continued right down to the last one... ] 2 Samuel 23:39 39 and Uriah the Hittite. There were thirty-seven in all.

A Hero?

Psalm 51 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. and cleanse me from my sin. (vrs. 1-2 NIV)

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. and my sin is always before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. and justified when you judge. (Psalm 51:3-4 NIV)

Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. you taught me wisdom in that secret place. (Psalm 51:5-6 NIV)

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. let the bones you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. and blot out all my iniquity. (Psalm 51:7-9 NIV)

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. (Psalm 51:10-12 NIV)

..... My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. you, God, will not despise. (Psalm 51:17 NIV)

..... What does it mean to “die to self”? (Note: this is NOT about suicide.)

Matthew 16:25 >> For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. Mark 8:35 >> For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. Luke 9:24 >> For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. (NIV ©1984)

Luke.17:33 >> Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self? (NIV ©1984)

Romans 6:8 >> Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. (NIV ©1984)

Galatians 2:20 >> I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. (NASB ©1995)

Philippians 1:21 -26 >> For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. 23 But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; 24 yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that your proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again. (NIV ©1984)
