3 © NACE 2012 Aspiration Ability & Achievement Dyhead, Dawn a Chyrhaeddiad Parents’ and Carers’ session What is meant by More Able and Talented? ‘In Wales we will use the term More Able and Talented to describe pupils who require opportunities for enrichment and extension that go beyond those provided for the general cohort of pupils. In general terms approximately 20% of the school population may be More Able while the top 2% could be considered Exceptionally Able.’ Curriculum of Opportunity: Potential into Performance

6 © NACE 2012 Aspiration Ability & Achievement Dyhead, Dawn a Chyrhaeddiad Parents’ and Carers’ session Research by Desforges showed that children do well when Parents/Carers:  encouraged a variety of interests  showed sensitivity to their child’s interests  helped children discover the fun of learning  were able to judge when to intervene, when to apply some pressure and when to stand back  worked in partnership with, and trusted, the school. (Professor Charles Desforges)
