Hourly Rounding

The Why… “ Hourly Rounding, developed by Studer Group, is a result of the largest study ever focused on the impact of rounding. Hourly Rounding is one of ten (10) ways hospitals can “see differently” and, at the same time, restore sanity and joy to our workforce.” Maureen Bisognano, COO of IHI, 2007 "...hourly rounds organize work flow, offering efficiencies by giving nurses time back as they proactively (rather than reactively) anticipate and attend to patients' needs." Margo Halm, RN, PhD, CNS-BC (2009). Hourly rounds: What does the evidence say?, American Journal of Critical Care, 18(6), 1-3.

The Goal of Hourly Rounding  To help practice behaviors which:  Reduce call lights  Reduce patient falls  Reduce skin breakdown  Improve patient perception of quality  Improve the patient experience  Give nurses more time for patient care tasks

Hourly Rounding Steps Perform each of these steps every time you "round" on a patient

Eight Behaviors for Hourly Rounding

Implementation of Hourly Rounding  Steps for implementation:  Post hourly rounding log in each patients' room and explain the purpose for the sheet and plan for hourly rounding.  Conduct purposeful rounding on each patient (including the 8 key behaviors) Round every HOUR from 6am to 10pm Round every TWO HOURS from 10pm to 6am  Document the round on the rounding log

What Is In It For the Staff?  Staff will have more time in a day to accomplish tasks.  Staff will run around less because of the reduced call lights.  Patients will be happier—that will make your job easier and day happier.  The units will be quieter and less hectic.

Hourly Rounding THANK YOU for being part of the BRG team!!! Please contact the Education Department with any questions - we have the TIME!
