2 Background  Established in 1966  Registered charity supported by –Central Government grants –income generated by programme activities –funds received for specific projects (e.g. LLAS SC)  CILT’s main objectives –to support and develop plurilingualism and intercultural competence in all sectors of the population

3 What do we do?  Promote languages and intercultural competence  Advise and support government on policy development and strategy implementation  Make the economic case for languages  Provide teacher training and professional development  Support innovation  Offer services and impartial brokerage to business  Provide specialist and expert information/resources  Support partners and practitioners at regional level  Develop and promote a wide range of publications

10 Strategic Direction 2005-06 Communications Draft Communications Strategy Promote and celebrate plurilingualism Promote the aims of the NLS and communicate progress Make the economic/employment case for languages Promote take-up of languages post-14 Support the introduction of languages in primary schools by raising awareness of the benefits of Early Language Learning Raise the profile of the National Centre Inspire, inform and develop our various audiences through events and publishing
