1.alien adj. foreign; different in nature or character. Example: Lamont the Lochness Monster was alien to all of the other creatures. 2.placid adj. calm or smooth. Example: The lake where Lamont lived usually appeared placid to the tourists who came by hoping to get a glimpse of the Lochness Monster. 3.temperate adj. having a climate that is unusually mild. Example: Lamont was thinking of leaving rainy Britain and moving to San Diego for its more temperate climate. Word list #2 MC
4.amphitheater n. a theater with rows of seats surrounding an open space or playing field. Example: Lamont had heard that San Diego had a nice amphitheater where he could see his favorite band Metallica. 5.lurid adj. shining with the red glow of fire seen through smoke. Example: Metallica is known for its lurid stage shows which feature lots of explosions and pyrotechnics. 6.derision n. scornful ridicule; contempt. Example: Lamont endured lots of derision because he was such an odd creature, neither a mammal nor a fish. 7.permeate v. to spread throughout. Example: Pollution was beginning to permeate the lake in Scotland where Lamont lived.

Example: When Lamont arrived in his new home he decided to loll around all afternoon.

Example: Lamont bought an auxiliary stereo for his new home so that he could listen to his Metallica CDs out by his swimming pool. 15.metabolism n. the process that converts fuel to energy. Example: Because he has such a fast metabolism, Lamont has several pizzas delivered a day and never gains a pound.
